OPEN DAY AT GREENHOUSE AND FREE LUNCH

Join us in the greenhouse for a gardening session and free lunch during our open greenhouse day on Sunday 6th May 2012.

We’ll be planting herbs and lettuce in the greenhouse from 11.30am to 2pm, with a free lunch (vegetarian Indian food including beetroot and cabbage grown on site) at 1pm. If anyone would like to help cook, please turn up at 11am.

Support for gardening activities will be provided by Streetscape, who train apprentices for horticultural work, and are currently based at the park.

There will also be a plant sale so come along and buy reasonably priced vegetable plants that you can grow at home.

FOOD SESSIONS AT THE PARK

FOOD HEROES

Come along and learn how to make home made Thai food during our Food Heroes session from 10.30am to 1pm in the park depot meeting room on Saturday 5th May.

This programme gives local people the chance to teach other people about the food they know and love. We pay local people £40 per session and give an allowance for food. If you are interested in becoming a food hero please contact Rebecca Maddox by email.

FAMILY COOK AND EAT BREAKFAST CLUB

We will be making green eggs and ham at the family cook and eat breakfast club this Friday 4th May, which takes place in the Mulberry Centre from 9am to 10.30am.

Parents and children cook and eat together during these sessions, which are free.

RETIRED PEOPLE'S LUNCH CLUB

Retired people are welcome to come and eat lunch made with vegetables and fruit from the greenhouse at the depot from noon each Friday.

The family cook and eat, food heroes and retired people’s lunch club are all funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme and are free to all participants.

CAFÉ OPENING TIMES

The café will be open from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday throughout the summer.

We will be installing a cooker in the next couple of weeks and launching a new menu of freshly cooked, locally sourced (our greenhouse!) food.

MYATT’S FIELDS PARK FAIR 2nd JUNE

Local people and organisations are invited to book their stalls for Myatt’s FieldsPark fair, which will be held from 1pm to 5pm on June 2nd 2012.

The fair will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a Big Lunch and performance by a big band on the bandstand from 1pm to 3pm. There will then be dancing with a jazz band from 3pm to 5pm.

There will also be a small fairground and children’s entertainment, as well as a range of community stalls.

CAFE WINTER OPENING HOURS
The Little Cat Café will be open from 10.30am to 4pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays throughout the winter (November to February).

We will be selling a fresh daily soup made where possible from vegetables from the greenhouse, as well as rolls and sandwiches, cakes, hot and cold drinks.

FOOD SESSIONS AT THE PARK:

FAMILY COOK AND EAT BREAKFAST CLUB

Parents and under-fives children are invited to cook and eat together at our family cook and eat breakfast club every Friday at 9am in the Mulberry Centre.

RETIRED PEOPLE'S LUNCH CLUB

Everyone is invited to enjoy a freshly cooked lunch at our retired people's lunch club which will be held every Friday at the depot meeting room from noon to 2pm.

Vegetables and fruit growing in the greenhouse will be used whenever possible in the meals that are prepared.

FOOD HEROES

Everyone is invited to come along and help prepare Polish food on Saturday 12th November during our Food Heroes session, which will run in the depot meeting room from 10.30am to 1pm. We will also be focussing on preventing food waste during this session.

Our Food Heroes programme means we employ local people to teach other local people about the food they know and love.

The family cook and eat, food heroes and retired people’s lunch club are all funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme.

YOGA IN THE PARK

Yoga and capoeira sessions have now closed for the winter.

At the moment we grow more than café can process, so we can offer some of the vegetables for sale. Look out for a box full of fresh vegetables grown in our greenhouse, collected on the day of sale.

A much wider range of food and drinks will be on offer at Myatt’s Fields Park’s Little Cat Café from Thursday 29th June.

The menu will include samosas, cream teas, a range of sandwiches (including a children’s simple cheese sandwich at £1.50) and salad box specials, using produce from the park’s greenhouse where possible. New drinks include iced coffee, dairy milkshakes and a smoothie of the day.

The menu has been designed by the park’s new food manager, Rebecca Maddox, who previously ran House café in Camberwell, and whose post is funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food fund.

We are delighted to welcome Rebecca Maddox, Myatt's Fields Park's new food manager, who started work on 26th May 2011. She will help us develop the cafe as well as running a range of food based community projects including a Food Heroes programme and a lunch club

Myatt’s Fields Park Project has put in an application to London Borough of Lambeth to change the official use of the Little Cat Café.

The building is still registered as a community building (as it was a One O’Clock Club before being converted into a cafe) and we therefore need to change its official use to a café.

Lambeth is currently consulting local people to gain their views about whether this building should be used as a café. The Little Cat Café and Myatt’s Fields Park Project would obviously appreciate any letters or emails of support (details on planning notices around the park).

Please do contact me (Victoria Sherwin) if you have any queries about this on 0207 926 0394.

We are offering eight week work experience placements at the park café, as well as five one-year gardening placements at the park.

The café placement will include training in coffee making (barista skills) on a one day course as well as food hygiene training.

The gardening placements will include horticultural training at the park, as well sponsorship to take a horticultural course at Capel Manor (in Crystal Palace). Several courses are on offer, depending on previous experience and knowledge.

The gardening training is offered to five people, who will be asked to work five hours a week at Myatt’s, working either in the greenhouse or the wildlife area.

The café work experience people will be taken on one at a time, and will be required to work 25 hours a week for eight weeks.

These are volunteer posts and therefore no pay is available. We will pay registration and travel costs for people attending Capel Manor.

Candidates for both must be Lambeth residents, on low incomes and living in low income households. The scheme is funded by the Walcot Foundation.

Please contact Kasia Olszewska (kolszewska@lambeth.gov.uk), Myatt’s park manager about the gardening placements, and Victoria Sherwin (Vsherwin@lambeth.gov.uk) about the café work experience.

Poster attached, please do pass on to anyone you think will be interested.

We are delighted to announce that we have bought an ice cream bike for Myatt’s Fields Park.

This has been funded by the Peter Minet Trust, and decorated with the distinctive Little Cat Café logo.

The bike will be able to sell ice creams around the park, and hopefully in the longer term we will be able to make our own ices using fruits from the greenhouse.

We do however need a large freezer to store ices and would welcome any donations of second hand freezers from local people, or donations towards buying a freezer (approximate cost £400).

Please contact me at this address if you would like to help  vsherwin@lambeth.gov.uk
