FOOD PROJECT
Volunteers grow beautiful vegetables and fruit in our greenhouse. We want local
people to use these to cook and share food together. We aim to build a truly local
food culture based on the knowledge of people living around the park.
How Do I Get Involved?
Food Heroes: We are paying local people to teach other people about
their food. Sessions are from 10.30am to 1pm on Saturdays in the
depot. Details of each session are included in the calendar on our
events page. To book a place on a particular day, please use this
form. Everyone welcome
Young Food Heroes: We want young people to explore the food they like,
and learn from each other. This term we are working with children from
Loughborough Primary School, who are bringing recipes from home to
cook in the depot, and their parents will then come and eat their
food.
Please see this Summary of the Food Heroes Cook & Eat Program.
Retired people’s Lunch Club: Enjoy a free light two course lunch from
noon to 2pm on Fridays in the depot (or on the bandstand on very fine
days!). No need to book and everyone welcome
Family cook and eat breakfast club: This happens every Friday morning
from 9-10:30am. Children and parents/carers cook and eat breakfast
together. No need to book and all families with children under five
welcome

We are part of Incredible Edible Lambeth, which aims to support food growers
and producers in Lambeth (see incrediblediblelambeth.org for more information
about the people involved and what we are doing together)
How do I get involved?
Baking for our café
Local people bake for our cafe, we pay £5 for small cake/12 cup cakes £7.50 for a large fruit cake or other large cake. We provide food hygiene training meaning
you don't need to have a home inspection.
Volunteer opportunities
We are always happy to have an extra pair of hands at any of the sessions to help with cooking or
harvesting ingredients from the greenhouse. You could bake and donate a cake or pudding for our
older persons lunch club. If you have a particular food interest or skill we would love to hear from you
and get you involved. Help with planning and running sessions is also gratefully received, especially in
developing a programme of food activites for young people.
Employment and training
Food manager: thanks to the Big Lottery’s Local Food Fund, we’ve employed a
Food Manager to develop the café business and run a range of community food
projects.
Café staff: Thanks to the Walcot Foundation, we employ two people in the café
four days a week
Work experience placements: From April 2011 we have offered eight week
work experience placements to people living in Lambeth on low incomes. These
placements are for 25 hours a week and include Barista (coffee making) and
food hygiene training

Our café ethos
Healthy: Celebrate and promote well being
High quality: Fresh, good quality food
Local and inclusive: Locally grown (in the greenhouses)
Notice: Buy fresh vegetables at the Little Cat Café At the moment we grow
more than café can process, so we can offer some of the vegetables for sale.
Look out for a box full of fresh vegetables grown in our greenhouse, collected on
the day of sale.
Local suppliers: Celebrating the best of local food culture. Meeting local
need and to local tastes
Profitable and financially sustainable: Profits from the food business are
re-invested in the business – no-one profits personally so everyone profits
Environmentally responsible
Family friendly
