                                      Greenhouse project

Myatt’s Fields Park has a large greenhouse and five large cold frames. We use these so local people can experience:

food they have played a part in growing

food which gives them an understanding of the process of production

food which has clocked up almost no food miles

The greenhouses have been renovated to provide a space for growing fruit and vegetables for the café, and also demonstration sessions for the local community. This means people of all ages can play a part in growing vegetables that they will eat in the café.

A park manager is employed in Myatt’s one day a week to run community gardening schemes.  We run monthly planting sessions where local people can help us germinate seeds and care for plants.

                                      How do I get involved?

Come along to our monthly planting sessions (look out for announcements on the Noticeboard)

Join our rota of people who care for the plants one day a week

Join our greenhouse growing group that helps us plan the way the
                                      project develops

                                      Building a Keyhole Garden

                                      Picture
During last greenhouse session group of volunteers built a keyhole garden. This type of garden is a raised bed shaped like a keyhole and  it is walled in by stone. In the centre, a basket made from sticks and straw holds manure and later, vegetable scraps and garden waste for compost. The garden is watered primarily through the basket in the centre, which distributes the nutrients from the compost to the plants. A keyhole garden can provide plenty of vegetables for all the family and any peelings or vegetables not used can be added straight to the compost in the centre of the garden to help grow more, therefore there is no waste. This kind of raised vegetable patch is compact and easy to build. Also it is a great bonding activity for a community and family. Visit the Send a Cow website for lots more information and ideas, or pop in to our greenhouse to see what we built.
