Myatt’s Fields Park has huge potential to provide a platform for local people’s talent and cultural heritage from its many event spaces (bandstand, summerhouse, picnic and quiet areas, wildlife area, playground, sports facilities and new community hub).
The Lambeth Community Connection (LCC) Project aim was to support Black, Indigenous and People of Colour to design and deliver a range of cultural, heritage and nature/food-based activities in the park. This dedicated initiative focused on boosting local employability, diversifying park leadership, and strengthening community ties.
Operating through a "skeleton" setting at the Depot and the Minet Library during its final stages, the project successfully met and often exceeded its core development targets.Key achievements and updates from the project included:
Skills & Employability: Since August 2023, the project allocated 133 training courses, resulting in 45 individuals trained and the completion of 6 business plans for local stallholders.
Inclusive Leadership: A major goal was to ensure park leadership reflects the local community; the project successfully recruited 2 BAME employees and 2 other potential BAME Board Members, moving the Board toward a more equitative BAME representation.
Community Reach: The project significantly increased park engagement, recording 6,066 attendances at events, far exceeding the original target of 3,000.
Operational Resilience: Despite challenges, such as limited access to the Depot, the project maintained progress by working with local partners to deliver activities and workshops.
Creative Engagement: To document these impacts, a filmmaker was recruited to capture the views of beneficiaries, serving as a marketing tool to further maximize involvement from diverse groups.
