Volunteer gardening FAQs
1. Why do we need volunteer gardeners in the park?
The pandemic has delayed a lot of work that we need to crack on with.
Between March and May our gardening staff were furloughed. Some staff have been shielding against the virus. Much of the routine gardening work, due to take place, hasn’t been done.
Park staff returned in June. They're working valiantly to catch up, but there's still so much to do. That's why we need your help.
2. What work will I be doing?
During the summer you'll be weeding and mulching overgrown flower beds and shrubberies – and watering new plants.
As the seasons turn we might prepare areas for wildflower or annual seed sowing, planting, laying turf, or propagating plants.
Tony and Taye our gardeners will guide you through any gardening techniques required. Complete beginners are very welcome, but keen gardeners would also be much appreciated of course.
3. What equipment and refreshments will we provide you with?
Our gardening staff will provide you with any gardening tools you need.
We'll sanitise these tools before handing them over to you. Each session, we'll also provide you with:
Volunteers don't have to wear a face mask outside as long as they are 2m apart from other park users.
Our staff will wear face masks throughout.
Gel sanitiser and sanitising wipes will be available at the work location, the park depot and at the Little Cat Café.
Consider wearing stout footwear such as work boots (steel toecaps are not necessary), and long trousers.
If you have a favourite pair of gardening gloves, please bring these too – although we will provide gloves if not.
You can have one free hot or cold drink from Little Cat Café each session – plus 20% off any food or further drinks on the day.
4. What do I need to do before I start?
Complete the online application form, which involves agreeing to our terms and conditions.

Tony, our horticultural manager, will contact you after your application has been processed.

Tony will induct you on site, provide what you need and get you going on gardening. Induction guide.
We recommend that you join the Park Gardeners WhatsApp group to support each other.

If you need to leave early, or arrive later, that’s fine – we appreciate anytime you can spare.
