BIG LUNCH 2ND JUNE 2013
Everyone is welcome to enjoy free South American music on the bandstand and share food with neighbours during our Big Lunch from 1pm to 4pm on 2nd June.
Sarabanda will be playing Cuban music including Hot Cuban Salsa, Son, Timba, Cha cha cha and Latin jazz.
We will set up tables around the bandstand for people to eat, and we will be giving away samples of Caribbean, Indian, Columbian and Italian food prepared by our food heroes as a celebration of our two year long food project.
We are urgently looking for four strong people to help set up and clear away, and will pay £10 an hour for 11am to noon, and then 4pm to 5pm. Please contact Victoria Sherwin on 0207 926 0394 or by email if you can help. We’d also very much appreciate help from volunteers during the event (helping on the cake stall, general stewarding).
HELP FOR LOCAL FOOD GROWING PROJECTS
Myatt’s Fields Park is offering to support the development of ten local food growing projects in 2013-14.
The park, which has a large greenhouse and a newly appointed community gardener (Fabrice Boltho), is offering the following help to each project:
The scheme is funded by City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation’s Charity, under its Growing Localities programme.
The closing date for applications is Monday 20th May 2013. See the previous post for more information and an application form.
LITTLE CAT CAFÉ AND TAKE AWAY
The menu for the Thai take away this week will be vegetable red curry and chicken yellow curry. The café is open Friday to Sunday, 10.30am to 5pm.
We are pleased to say that we’ll also be open for bank holiday Monday (27th May) and all of half term.
FOOD SESSIONS AT THE PARK
Our Local Food funding ends this week. We’ve had two great years learning about different foods, making new friendships and meeting a lot of new people.
At present, the parents’ breakfast club, retired people’s lunch and food heroes will not have funding to continue in their current format.
However, there is good news:
We will have a small amount left over from the Local Food grant so we can continue to run the retired people’s lunch until this money runs out. We are also seeking funding to continue to run the retired people’s lunch from July 2013 – June 2014. We will know about the results of this funding application around June 2013.
If any parents would be interested in volunteering to run the Friday morning sessions, we will provide you with food safety training and support you to do this.
We have funding to run a new World Food project from May 2013. This will include working with local people to document the food they eat and the stories behind these foods. We will learn about the history of foods from the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe and will explore how they have influenced each other. We’ll create a world map showing the stories behind the food we eat today and run lots of workshops (maybe in the same way as food heroes) to explore all of this.
This project could also include workshops targeted to a range of people eg young parents, children and teenagers. The food history project will be run by a board of local people, who will help us design the workshops and activities.
RETIRED PEOPLE'S LUNCH CLUB
Retired people are welcome to come and eat lunch made with vegetables and fruit from the greenhouse at the depot from noon this Friday. These sessions are informal and friendly and everyone is welcome. We ask for a £2 contribution towards the cost of the food.
The food sessions are funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme.
